DAY 44

27th January 2021

We left Mayfield and drove down to the Freycinet Peninsula. We stopped for a few minutes at a bridge on the way that looked like it was built by convicts.

We went to check out the Friendly Beaches campsite. There were some spaces available so we set up the pop up tent to save one of the spots. Space 12.

We drove back out and down into the National Park to do the Wineglass Bay walk. It was 11km. We started by walking up to the lookout over Wineglass Bay. The weather was unfortunately not very nice - grey and cloudy and cool. Good for walking but not so good for views. We had to then walk down over 1,000 steps to the beach. We passed so many people walking up - some of them looked like they were dying! It would have been hard work!

We crossed the isthmus to Hazards Beach then along other beaches and back to the car. The walk back was actually quite tricky and a little boring - scrambling over rocks and through scrubby grey bushland while being attacked by mozzies. I thought I’d killed Josh when we got back to the car - he looked totally wrecked! I was surprised he actually came with me.

We went back to the campsite that we’d saved only to find another person had actually pushed into our site! Honestly, the first time we’d saved a spot and some dickhead decided he’d share our spot. I was very annoyed, Josh decided to make friends with the guy though. If we’d had a caravan he wouldn’t have decided to push in, I’m sure!

DAY 45

28th January 2021

We went to visit Cape Tourville in the Freycinet National Park and did a short walk around the lighthouse. Then we drove to Sleepy Beach and walked down the track to the beach. Josh stayed at the top and the walk was a bit longer than I would have liked after yesterday’s long walk! We left Freycinet after that, and headed north.

It was a pretty miserable day so we stopped to camp early at the inland town of St Mary’s. The campsite there had clean toilets and showers and phone reception. It was drizzly and cold though so we spent quite a bit of time sitting in the cab. It was great to have a nice hot shower too.
