DAY 70

22nd February, 2021

A long drive north today. It’s too hard near big cities to get good campsites so we hightailed it out of the area. We stopped at Port Wakefield, which was cute. We stopped and had lunch at Bumbunga Lake, a pink salt lake, where we also flew the drone. It wasn’t overly pink though, as there wasn’t much water left. I walked on the salt, it was so thick and crunchy, a bit like snow without the squeaky noise.

We drove through Snowtown and I remember saying something to Josh about it ringing a bell. It was only a little later that I realised it was the place of the body in a barrel murders!! Glad I didn’t think of it at the time!

We stopped off to have a look at the little cute town of Yacka on the way north, and finally stopped at a campsite at Murray Town. We were there with a few other people, but they were all under this big shed because it was really windy. We spotted somewhere to park then asked the guy near us if he’d mind if we scooched in next to him – it was awfully windy and much better near shelter once we moved. I’m glad I asked. The campsite had toilets, showers and a really nice little camp kitchen which we made use of.

DAY 71

23rd February, 2021

We left Murray Town late-ish, heading towards the Ikara-Flinders ranges. We saw a sign for Alligator Gorge on the way and so of course I made Josh go there. We went to the main lookouts there which were nice, but the walk to the bottom of the gorge was supposedly 2km but a 2 hour return! Insane. I decided to do it anyway – surely it didn’t take that long. Josh wanted to work on the car so I left him there, pulled on my backpack and headed off.

Bloody National Parks though! They had signage that didn’t link up, so I ended up going the wrong way to the Terraces when I was supposed to go to the Narrows (still didn’t take 2 hours to walk it though…). I finally got on the right path, and the Narrows were awesome. I saw a snake though and freaked out a bit. Saw some wallabies too which was nice. There was no one else down there and it was very enjoyable!

I caught up with Josh back in the carpark and we had some lunch then drove to Wilmington. We pulled over there because the toy museum had a line up out the front of heaps of Land Rovers and a few old Jeeps. There were also some Landy’s in the back behind a fence, being looked after by a friendly goat. The owner saw us looking and got us to go inside the toy museum, where he had the second largest collection of toy Land Rovers in the world (I think that’s what he said). They were everywhere!

We drove from there through Hawker and out to Wilpena Pound. We stopped on the way to look around at the old buildings that were there. I had booked the campground there at the resort for three nights. Josh thought I was being silly and that it was too long but it turned out to be a great decision. We got there about 5:30 so set up camp and had dinner.
