DAY 26

9th January 2021

We left the campsite early and drove towards Bright for the second time this trip. We followed the same route as last time through the town, but turned off towards a place called Ovens, which had loads of orchards on the side of the road. We drove through Stanley to Beechworth – gosh that’s a lovely place! But so busy!

We drove on to Eldorado, where there was a historic gold and tin bridge to visit. It was built in 1936 and stopped working in 1954, after they had already extracted up to 2 tonnes of gold!

We went for lunch at Glenrowan, the site of Ned Kelly’s last stand. We did the town walk to find out more but the information on the signage boards was just dreadfully confusing and not in any kind of order! We got to the campsite at Lurg early, did washing and had showers. It was at an old school, so cute! Josh spent hours talking to the old man caretaker there.

DAY 27

10th January 2021

We left Lurg and drove to Beralla. We bought the cheapest fuel of the entire journey there. We then went to the lake at Bonnie Doon from the movie The Castle, where we had lunch. We’re boarding the ferry this afternoon so had lots of time to kill, as it doesn’t start boarding until around 7pm.

We drove the Black Spur Road to Healesville. It was as beautiful as it looks on Instagram but it’s an actual highway – so busy! There was nowhere to park along the road. The people who get the lovely shots of the road and ferns must get there early in the morning or are very lucky.

We drove through some vine country and stopped at a park at Yarra Glen. It was hot and we were only wasting fuel by just driving around. Sitting in the shade and waiting it out was a much better option.

We checked in at 6:40, then boarded the boat around 8pm. It all went smoothly.

Driving onto the Spirit of Tasmania

Earlier on that day I’d already added a cabin room on to our ferry crossing, and I was so glad of it. $230 well spent I think, though it was very expensive! They checked our covid pass and tickets and we parked the car and left it on the deck.

We had dinner on the ship, it was pretty decent but they weren’t serving it for very long – by the time we got there, they were almost closing! Lacking in food choices a little, but the curry was good.

We went back to the cabin. We had a 2-bed cabin which also had a toilet and shower. In it, we could also take our masks off. That was one of the main reasons I paid for it, as being out on the deck meant that we would have had to wear masks all night. We went to sleep, but I woke up sometime in the morning. We were going up, up, up, then down, down, down. It was a strange sensation.

The view from our little cabin - well worth the money.
