We drove today from Birdsville to Cooper Creek campsite via Betoota. But of course we stopped by the Burke and Wills tree before leaving Birdsville. This tree is marked to commemorates Camp LXXVI of Burke and Wills expedition. For those who don't know much Australian history, Burke and Wills attempted a south-north expedition of Australia, from Melbourne to the Gulf, in the 19th century. The tree is marked BW-C76 1860

Of course, we had to stop in at the hotel in Betoota! We chatted to the publican and bought some pies and soft drinks for lunch.. It was a weird place – in the middle of nowhere, with only a pub and a racetrack. That’s it!

We got to lovely Cooper Creek fairly early and set up camp. We went looking for firewood, but there was loads around. We also got what was probably the best campsite in the whole area! Right next to the river at the end of the road. I used the chainsaw for the first time!

We lit a fire and had potatoes, corn and broccoli for dinner and looked at the stars.
