This day was truly the worst of the whole trip, so be warned.

We stopped at Bedourie on our way to Birdsville to use the public loos and free showers! Oh it was sooooo nice! However, Josh came back feeling a little unwell from the hot shower. We continued on and got to Birdsville. We decided to set up camp early at the Old Diamantina River crossing. There were hundreds, maybe thousands, of noisy corellas flying around. No wonder it’s called Birdsville.

I did photos while Josh watched Youtube – we had some limited reception. I started dinner and Josh started feeling really unwell – really cold and shivery. He put on track pants, two jumpers and a beanie. He also grabbed a rug and wore that too, unable to get warm. I made pesto for dinner, just something quick and easy, then he went up to bed while I packed up for the night.

About 11pm he got out to do a wee and that’s when the nightmare started. I was doing a wee too when I heard a big thumping noise. He’d been holding on to the car and had passed out and fallen onto the bonnet of the car. I tried to get him some water and he fell over backwards like a sack of potatoes – he’d passed out again. He must have smacked his head and started vomiting, and then was choking on his vomit too. He was having some kind of seizure and his teeth were clamped shut while I was trying to clear his mouth of vomit so he wouldn’t choke. He finally came to and vomited his dinner all over his jumper, poor thing. We got that off him and I cleaned him up then helped him back up to the tent.

We had a sleep but I was just dozing, worried that if I couldn’t hear him, he was in trouble again. At 3am, he felt sick again so I opened the door of the tent and he managed to vomit out there, and I went out to clean it up. I didn’t sleep after that, too worried. Thank god the dawn came around because it had been a truly horrible night.

We still don’t know what happened. It wasn’t food poisoning because I’d eaten the same food.
