We drove the rest of the Plenty Highway to the Stuart Highway then onto Alice Springs! I write this quite casually, but the road had still been pretty awful, then got better as we got towards the Stuart, because they were doing roadworks on it and there was newly graded dirt and even asphalt as we got closer!

We got to Alice Springs and drove to the caravan park I wanted to stay at – no vacancies! So we were at a bit of a loss for camping options. We decided the best course was to head into the West MacDonnell Ranges, where there were quite a few free campsites. Turned out to be the BEST idea!

We stopped first at the beautiful Simpson’s Gap, a gap between two rocky hills. There was some water there too; it was a bit stagnant and needed a good flush out!

We set up camp at a free site on the Hugh River. You could drive pretty far along the river, which was just a rocky riverbed, no water, so there was heaps of space and no one near us. There were budgies and birds everywhere, it was fantastic. We had a fire and took some star photos as well.
