DAY 146

13th July 2021

We walked down to the bottom of the gorge in the morning which was just so nice. Definitely worth the walk.

We drove a lot today because we were pretty much in the middle of nowhere. We stayed at a BP station in Mt Garnet for the night where they had an ex-caravan park as part of the servo. There were showers there but all were painted black with some bright neon paint splashed all around, it felt like I was at a rave everytime I went to the loo. But it was a free campsite so not turning my nose up! Was had a very nice, calm and quiet night

DAY 147

14th July 2021

We left the BP and stopped off at Little Millstream Falls. The Millstream falls themselves were closed for backburning, but I went for a wander down to the little ones. You could swim in them if so inclined, but I was not. They were pretty though.

We then drove through the Atherton Tablelands, a place that I would definitely go back to. It was so green and fertile and just beautiful. No photos because we just drove through so you'll have to take my word for it. From there we went in to Cairns for a lap. Quite nice but very touristy.

We’d booked a night in another NP site for the night called Speewah Conservation Park, up by Kuranda. It was a very curly drive up there. We got to the park, and they were ALL tent sites except for three which were caravan sites. As in, you had to carry everything over a barrier and onto a grassy area, which wasn’t flat anyway. The site had said you could camp beside your car, as I always check since tent camping can mean many things. It was obvious that we couldn’t camp at the tent sites.

We were parked next to another couple who had done the same thing, as they were camping in their car too. They were waiting to see if people turned up for the caravan sites, and sure enough they did.

There was literally nowhere else around there to camp and we were both really cranky about the situation and it was raining too, so we decided to drive down to a carpark at the bottom part of the park and just camp there. It wasn’t the best, but we were at least safe, it was flat, and if a ranger turned up I would have given him a piece of my mind!

There were toilets and a cold water shower at the campsite too. It was a rainy night though and we didn’t see any cassowaries.

Later when I got back to service, I emailed the Queensland National Parks and told them to fix up their descriptions and to give me my money back. Got it back too, and they have amended their description so now other people won't make the same mistake, so that was a good outcome.
