DAY 96
20th March 2021
We drove to Kalbarri to look around. We stopped on the way at some of the cliffs of the national park but we had to leave because of all the flies. We kept referring to the flies as "sticky" - they wouldn't move off your face even when you waved them away. We ended up with them all in the car too - I've never seen flies like that before, they could make you go mad! So the first port of call when we got to Kalbarri was to find some fly nets. We managed to get some in the IGA there, hurrah!
We spent the day in Kalbarri sitting at a table by the beach because it was under a shelter with a delicious ocean breeze. It was 40 degrees.
We drove back to the camp site and stayed in a lovely grassy site with no one around and kangaroos visiting in the evening.
DAY 97
21st March 2021
We visited Kalbarri National Park. We went via the cliffs we'd visited yesterday with our face nets and had a fly-free experience (well on the face at least!). Other people fighting with the flies were asking where we got our nets!
We drove into town and filled up our water, then on to the park.
We visited the Skywalk first, what a feat of engineering that was!
Next to explore was the nature’s window. It was 43.7 degrees according to the park signage, but I didn’t see that before I set off to the window. It was about a 1km walk there and back, but it was worth it, though the 500m back was a hard slog uphill.
This was followed by the Z-bend but it was much too hot and too far to walk in the heat. So we parked up and flew the drone around for a bit.
We sat in a shelter and had lunch while being seriously attacked by flies. Then we went back to Kalbarri town and spent the afternoon in our shady shelter by the beach.
We had an early dinner at Kalbarri, cooked in the Landy behind the shelter we’d been using, then drove out to the highway via the Hawks Head viewpoint in the national park to take some photos before the sun set.
We got to our campsite in the dark and picked a spot – very difficult in the very dark night!
