I went to Winchester on what turned out to be a lovely winter's day - yes it was a bit rainy at times and sometimes a bit muddy on paths, but the blue sky and the sunshine was very welcome! The first thing I did when I got there was go for a walk to the old Hospital of St Cross. It is very very old, founded between 1132 and 1136 and the first charitable institution in the UK, as it used to house the poor. Now, around 25 men live there and they must be single (or widowed or divorced), over 60 and attend daily prayer ceremonies in the church. It's just one of those old English traditions that is still kept alive today!
