I read about Bonnieux in the Peter Mayle book A Year in Provence and decided to take a look. I was heading down to Aix and it was on the way. It was a pretty little place, with a mountain-top cemetery and lots of little windy roads. I also got there at the right time - they only open the church at the top of the hill for a few hours each day. I realised when I returned home, however, that the name Bonnieux was so familiar because there's a garden there that Monty Don goes to in his French Garden TV show. And I missed it. Guess I'll just have to go back!

I spent the night in Aix-en-Provence, eating cheese and bread and drinking a bottle of Taittinger that I picked up in Reims especially for my birthday.
