These are my top 5 highlights from my time in Madrid.

1. ROYAL PALACE

The standout building in Madrid, the Palace was as gorgeous outside as it was inside. No photos from inside because they didn't allow it (boo!) but from what I remember, it was pretty spectacular. The outside is too - amazing from all different angles, though I think my favourite was this one taken from Jardines de Sabatini

2. MUSEO CERRALBO

This museum was one of those that just feels like the owner stepped out to get milk. Not only was it absolutely stunning, but you could just wander around with no ropes or set paths. I like museums like that - they feel much more welcoming. Hard to pick a favourite room, but it would be a toss up between the pink one with the black and white floor, the painted room, or the ballroom.

3. BASILICA OF SAN FRANCISCO EL GRANDE

I've been to a lot of churches, but this one was quite spectacular and worth the entrance fee. I particularly liked the blue ceiling, which you don't see enough of, and the fact that it seemed to escape the notice of the tourist crowds

4. CRYSTAL PALACE

Living in London and knowing the history of the Crystal Palace here, it was really nice to see one modelled off our one still standing. It was pretty spectacular, and the early morning light just made it seem like something from a fairytale

5. SHOP FRONTS

Bright, colourful, interesting - Madrid's shopfronts had it going on!
