When built, this church was the second most expensive church in London after St Paul's. Its exterior features four maidens carved out of Coade stone, much like the caryatids of Athens. When these were added to the church, the architect found that they were too tall to fit! He then took the drastic action of cutting through their midriffs, thus reducing their height!
